Day 6- 28.1 miles
January 10, 2023
We were hopeful as we woke up this morning. We knew in about 10 miles we would pass the confluence of the Suwannee with the Alapaha River and hoped that meant the current would pick up. When we reached it though, it was obvious our speed would not be picking up much... the Alapaha was much smaller than it looked on the map. We brushed off our disappointment and were rewarded not long after with a series of small rapids that made the miles fly by. We passed by a number of springs today, paddling up to each of them so I could let the warm water run over my hands.
I had seen a Florida Trail campsite marked on Google maps that we thought would be perfect, but when we reached it, it was obvious we couldn't access it from the river, so we had no choice but to keep paddling. Not long after though, Henry spotted a small pathway up the bank by a spring and we found a beautiful spot just off the FT... and it even had a picnic table.
I watched the sunset over the river down by the bank as Henry cooked us dinner, using up the last of our fresh broccoli for mac n cheese. As we sat in the dark taking turns eating out of the big pot of pasta, we heard the distinct sound of wild hogs snorting and rifling through the underbrush, alarmingly close to our campsite. Henry brough a paddle up and left it outside the tent in case he has to whack one on the head tonight lol.
