Day 9- 30.3 miles
January 13, 2023
Today was our biggest mileage day yet! (Mostly because we wanted to paddle to stay warm). The storm from last night caused the temp to drop. It was windy and COLD. I paddled in all of my layers all day including two pairs of socks and still lost feeling in my feet. Despite this, this was the strongest I've felt this whole trip so far. All of my blisters have hardened into callouses, my arms and back feel strong and I never tired once. So... note to future self: Day 9 is when you get your paddling arms.
We passed by a lot of old, sunken boats today. I am missing the upper Suwannee and its seclusion. You could feel like no one else has ever been on the river when you're in that swamp. I also miss the sun. Sure didn't take many pictures today, the river wasn't very scenic and my fingers weren't working anyways.
Set up camp in a grassy area at a park. I was desperate to get into the tent and warm up and since we got here late in the evening we figured no one would bother us during the night. Henry fished from the bank for awhile while I burrowed in my quilt, reaching out every now and then only to grab some snacks to shove in my mouth. A group of teen girls did show up around 1 am and had a dance party in the parking lot to old 90s country songs, including Seminole Wind, which is now stuck in my head and I think should be our theme song for this trip. Their song choices were so on point I couldn't even care that they were keeping me up :-)
