Day 8- 27.7 miles
January 12, 2023
We packed up camp after a great nights sleep at the river camp. We flew all morning, paddling hard knowing the sooner we got to the town of Branford, the sooner we could eat an entire pizza. We had a weird mile or two of being surrounded by literally thousands of vultures. Circling in the sky, hanging out in the treetops, they were everywhere.

The miles went by easily and before we knew it we were there around 2:30 pm. Leaving the canoe and all of our belongings in it at the boat dock in town was risky, but we were willing to take the chance. I went to the dollar store to pick up some drinks for us while Henry walked to get the pizza. We had a nice picnic in the park and no one stole our canoe yay!
I was in a full on food coma afterwards and Henry told me to lay back and relax in the sun while he paddled. With the river being much wider and more populated now than the upper Suwannee, campsites were becoming a little harder to find. We never failed to come across the perfect one though, right before dark. I had been watching the map and knew we had a little sliver of public land to our left before we ran into more houses. Although we had to drag ourselves up a vertical sandy cliff to get up to a flat spot, it was still beautiful and a perfect protected site to weather the storm coming that night. Around midnight it started to thunder and dump rain. It was so warm out that we laid naked in the tent, staying nice and dry while watching the lightning flash, illuminating everything as if it was daylight.
