Day 3, 23.7 miles

January 7, 2023

Day 3 and I still can't keep my eyes off the way the sunlight changes as it filters through the moss throughout the day. It stayed chilly for longer today and I paddled most of the morning in leggings and socks.

Morning fog on the Suwannee

Sitting in the warm sand on lunch break devouring an avocado bagel was heavenly. We paddled up to several springs, their clear water pouring in to mix with the dark tannin of the Suwannee.

We pulled up to the perfect campsite right at golden hour. Henry climbed out of the canoe and pulled me ashore so I wouldn't have to get my cold feet wet, hehe. We kissed and I did a little dance, excited at our find. The setting sun cast a warm orange glow on everything from the moss to the palmettos. We set up the tent, our sleeping pads and quilts before Henry wandered down the bank fishing and I set my hammock up.

I pulled on my layers, including Henry's sweatpants and my fleece, when the sun disappears the cold sneaks up quick. I lounged in my hammock, enjoying the silence, watching Henry as he caught a small bass and released it. As night fell we sat in the sand and cooked a dinner of broccoli mac and cheese with salmon. Curled up exhausted in the tent, I was grateful for Henry's warmth, the humidity really does make the chill cut right through you. As I lay there waiting for sleep to come, a barred owl hooted in the trees above us.
