Day 7- 24.7 miles
January 11, 2023
We started later than usual this morning. As the days go on, we seem to start later and later, choosing to sleep in and cuddle and take our time packing up camp because we know we're only going to take one break the entire day. Plus... we're just plain tired in the mornings.
Our quilts got pretty damp last night from condensation so when we pulled up to a park for lunch we pulled everything out of our dry bags and laid it out along the bank to dry in the hot sun while we ate.
The park had a big beautiful spring and we carried our food up to it and sat along it's banks while I munched on a bagel creation of salmon and chips. The river has definitely been getting wider, the current almost nonexistent. I could feel myself getting stronger though and hadn't even bothered to tape my blisters this morning as they were already turning into callouses.
We were excited to discover that if we paddled a couple more miles than planned we could get to Peacock Slough paddling camp and spend the night there this time. With this in mind we picked up the pace and got to the camp around 4:30 with plenty of daylight to spare. The camp had carts conveniently left at the top of the steps to haul all of our gear to the sites.
Unable to find the camp hosts, we picked an empty screened in pavilion and unloaded. I cannot get over how nice these camps are, the pavilion has electricity, lights, and a fan. We set up our sleeping pads on the wooden floor and then I went to take another luxurious shower. We sat outside at the picnic table cooking dinner as I gnawed on my huge Trader Joe's dark chocolate bar.
Afterwards we cuddled up in bed, Henry playing music on his phone, the crickets chirping around us and a nice breeze blowing through the screens. I fell asleep feeling clean, warm, and extraordinarily happy.
