April 30, 2023 Day 30
Mile 508.3-536 (27.7 miles)
Super easy trail this morning. On one of the forest road walks we came upon a guy whose truck was stuck in a patch of snow. We offered to help, he had a four wheeler in the bed which he hooked a tow rope to his truck, and I tried pulling him out on the quad while he reversed in the truck. Unfortunately he was stuck, stuck and the quad was only 2wd so there wasn’t much traction. He said his brother would come to his rescue so we left him and continued walking.
Before we knew it we were at our camp goal by 5 p.m. (that’s what happens when the trail is flat) so we decided to start our road walk to cut some miles off tomorrow.

We’d decided earlier in the day to road walk to Flagstaff and push ourselves (well… me mostly, because I’ve never done a 30) and do 30+ miles into Flagstaff tomorrow.
Henry was full of energy on our road walk, walking backwards and singing while I struggling to keep up because of some pretty bad sciatic pain. So let’s hope that’s gone by tomorrow morning.
We slipped under a barbed wire fence by the road and set up camp in the woods- close enough that we can still hear the highway but far enough that our headlamps wouldn’t attract unwanted attention from people driving by who might investigate. Just to be safe we used them minimally only to cook a quick dinner and ate in the dark before passing out.
