Day #6 Neel Gap to Whitley Gap Shelter
March 14, 2018
This morning I was sore, but not too bad as I got going. I moved slow getting ready before I met up with Knope and the two of us headed out of the cabins by 11. We decided on a short day, which was a good idea with my knee anyway, and only went to Whitley Gap. It started off so cold and windy, but finally the sun came out and it ended up being a beautiful day. We had some great views today overlooking the mountains and even though the trees have no leaves and everything is brown, Georgia is still gorgeous.

We made it to the shelter, a mile off trail (current note: what the fuck were we thinking), and immediately cooked supper at the picnic tables because we were starving. Then, because it was still pretty chilly with the wind, we laid out our sleeping bags in the sun and watched a few episodes of Parks and Rec on Knope's phone. We got here really early since we only did about 5ish miles today.
A section hiking family of 3 showed up but tented nearby. We decided to set the tents up in the shelter since it was nearing evening and doesn't look like anyone else would think of making the mile long trek off trail just to stay here. It's in the high 20s and cold so hopefully that helps block the wind some. We sat around eating snacks and chatting before climbing in the tents. Still quite awhile before sunset but I'm so tired and we are doing about 12 miles tomorrow. It feels nice to be hiking with somebody, to have someone to laugh with until our faces hurt about stupid shit.
