Day # 2 Springer Mountain Shelter to Hawk Mountain Shelter

March 10, 2018

Today I was soooo sore trying to crawl out of my tent. I stayed pretty warm last night until around 5 am. I gave up trying to sleep and got moving around 7 am. Hiked about 8 miles through beautiful tall pine trees and dense forest.

Beat the rain to the shelter. I got here so early I thought about moving on, but the threat of rain and the promise of keeping dry sleeping in the shelter won out. I met a super nice and funny girl named Nikki. We went down to the water source and filtered water together and chatted. She's an OT so we have the medical thing in common. She is really extroverted and friendly. We got a spot in the shelter along with two others before the rain started and others started pouring in.

I was hoping I'd be next to Nikki but some old guy ended up getting between us. The shelter is now full at 12 people. About 14 tents are now pitched outside. I'm glad I stopped as my right foot started to hurt about a mile before here and now I can massage it and rest. I want to try to do my first 15 mile day tomorrow to Lance Creek. I've been making really good time and I think if I pace myself I can do it. That will get me into Neels Gap on Monday. I have a few bars here so I've been texting the family. I miss everyone a lot. I cannot believe I'm doing this.
